THERAPY FOR FAITH ISSUES

Exploring your faith and its impact on your healing.

Faith and spirituality can be essential sources of strength and pain

For some people, therapy that incorporates the individuals’ spiritual beliefs can be helpful in overcoming their mental health struggles. This type of therapy acknowledges the relationship between our faith and our psychological wellbeing. It can help an individual work through issues spiritually as well as other challenges life presents. Faith-based counseling is designed to help people of all faiths. For individuals with a particularly strong religious or spiritual belief system, this type of therapy can be very effective, allowing them a way to incorporate their religious beliefs into their therapy. This allows those with a strong connection to their faith, a safe and secure place to explore and grow in their personal spiritual journey.

For many, religion and spirituality can be a way to find purpose, reliance on God, or a power greater than themselves, a community with like-minded believers, and a guide on how to live a moral life. For others, however, religious beliefs and practices can lead to psychological distress, painful experiences, internal conflict, guilt, shame, and trauma.

Cairn Wellness Center therapists only incorporate faith-based therapy with traditional psychotherapy practice when specifically requested by our patients, so if you are looking for Christian or another form of spiritual counseling, please be sure to request this.

We can help with:

  • Healing from religious trauma or spiritual abuse

  • Exploration of how your spiritual beliefs impact anxiety, grief, or view of yourself

  • Leaning into your own values to make decisions

  • Utilizing your faith to create meaning and purpose in your life

Through faith-based counseling, individuals can experience meaningful and long-lasting changes in their lives. This opportunity can allow a client to have a deeper, more meaningful life by reflecting on their faith and learning new ways to understand who they are and the world around them, thus strengthening their faith and belief system.

how WE can help

Strengthen your sense of self by exploring your religious or spiritual values and beliefs.

Through collaboration with your CWC therapist, you can develop strategies that include your faith in your healing processes. This may be by considering prayer, meditation, a scripture study, or any form or practice that is meaningful to you.

In many cases, faith-based practices can be used in conjunction with traditional psychotherapy, allowing you to find a healing process that’s specific to you and your values. This can be a very effective way to address many different mental health issues unrelated to one’s spirituality, including anxiety, depression, or trauma.

Religious trauma therapy is based on the idea that some people develop unhealthy beliefs about God, or another higher power, because of traumatic events that occurred during childhood. These beliefs can cause them to feel guilty, ashamed, angry, depressed, and suicidal. This therapy aims to help people overcome these feelings by teaching them new ways of thinking about themselves and their faith.
